Men vs. Women in the Media

Miley Cyrus has been under the spotlight ever since her “scandalous” VMA performance, but barely anyone is talking about Robin Thicke. I don’t know if you’ve really listened to the lyrics of Blurred Lines or seen the music video, but I think a song with naked women in the video and lyrics that could easily be interpreted as a song about rape is worse than Miley’s VMA performance.

The lyrics of Robin Thicke’s song objectify women to no end. Some lyrics in his songs are phrases that rapists actually say to their victims.  In his song he sings, “I’ll give you something to tear your a** in two.” This is clearly suggesting violent sodomy. Another example is, “Do it like it hurt, do it like it hurt, what you don’t like work?” This insinuates that women are supposed to enjoy the pain during non-consensual sex.

So the question is, why is it acceptable for Robin Thicke to objectify women and it is totally inappropriate for Miley Cyrus to twerk and wear things that expose her body?

The answer: double standards. If you aren’t familiar with the term, according to the Oxford Dictionary, it is a rule or principle that is unfairly applied in different ways to different people or groups.

The double standard we’re dealing with here is, men vs. women in the media.

It is totally unacceptable that a man can do whatever he wants and dance with whoever he wants. But if a woman does it she is branded a “slut”.  This is exactly what happened with Miley! She twerked on Robin Thicke and she is called a whore. But Robin Thicke doesn’t get any of the blame.

Cyrus says to Rolling Stone, “No one is talking about the man behind the a**. It was a lot of ‘Miley twerks on Robin Thicke,’ but never, ‘Robin Thicke grinds up on Miley.’ They’re only talking about the one that bent over. So obviously there’s a double standard.”

Not only is nobody talking about “the man behind the a**” but also nobody is talking about how he is singing a song about rape! Is Miley really the person we want to be tearing apart here? It’s time to leave Miley alone and realize the real problem is Robin Thicke.

How can we love Robin Thicke’s disgusting song so much that it was number one for 16 weeks on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. So many people have listen to this song and loving it without realizing the utterly horrible meaning behind the song.

Rape needs to start being treated as a serious thing and not a topic you can write a song about. Maybe instead wasting your time hating on Miley for acting her age you could time of singing a song about rape and virtually promoting it, you could start a campaign to raise awareness.

Chicago Bulls defeat streaking Heat

On Wednesday March 27th, 2012 at about 6:00 pm at the United Center in Chicago Illinois, the Miami Heat were ready to stroll in and get their 28th win in a row. They were trying to brake the 33 Game win streak from the 71-72 Los Angeles Lakers during the Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West era. The struggling Chicago Bulls had other plans. They were trying to end the mighty Heat streak by playing hard nosed 70s smash mouth basketball. And that they did, and Bulls Point guard Kirk Hinrich Slammed Lebron James to the ground when James was on a fast break. Lebron was furious with the refs and thought Hinrich should have been ejected but for the fans of Chicago they absolutely loved it. I also loved it. The Bulls play tough Basketball and would never let the Miami show boats do trick dunks against them. Many of the Heat players said that because of the awful fouls is the reason they lost, but that should be how all N.B.A teams play against them because they do not like to get fouled. All in all it was a great win for Chicago and I personally loved the game.

Giving Up Privacy For Fame

Giving up privacy for fame. Many people are unaware of how much celebrities give up for fame. These days with technology and cameras, there’s no escape. Think about your own life. How would you feel if you had to dress up to do simple things like taking out the trash? How would you feel looking online and seeing yourself all over the place in pictures and articles? How would you feel knowing that thousands of people everyday search you up online and learn about you? Sometimes it may be fun to think about how well known you are, but most of the time it would be a hard thing to accept. Celebrities feel the need to always dress up and look perfect because if they don’t, they will be judged quicker than a flash of lightning. They give up so much privacy for their fame. All over the Internet there are pictures of them, videos of them, and rumors made up of them.

The giving up of privacy is a main reason lots of celebrities turn towards drugs. They feel like drugs are their escape from all the publicity and loss of privacy. It’s no wonder some Celebrities turn towards drugs as an escape from the high pressure. In reality the celebrity’s fans and public don’t care too much if they don’t look like they’re about to go to the Oscars. The magazine publishers and the paparazzi are the ones that give celebrities the pressure to be perfect.  Continue reading

How Steroids Have Impacted Sports

7850540522_55af4b2bdf_m

In today’s sports, such as baseball, basketball, and football, athletes need to be in prime condition in order to compete at such a high level. Year after year athletes are elevating their sport. Competing at the level they are at is getting harder and harder each and every year. They are setting the bar so high that it almost feels impossible to make it as a young athlete. Athletes all have their ways of staying strong, fit, and fueled. Some drink sports drinks and eat hefty meals. Some work out and do it the old way. Some athletes choose to disregard the right and legal way and take performance enhancing drugs.

These drugs make you stronger, faster, and can make you go longer. These drugs are very effective  and help a lot, but the fact of the matter is, they are illegal. It’s no question these are unfair. It’s like if Tom Brady had a bionic arm and the rest of the quarterbacks had just a normal arm. It’s unfair and just not right. These drugs can also give you major side effects like chest pains, bleeding, headaches, and in some cases more serious conditions, like heart problems and brain failure.

One big controversy regarding PED’s, ( Performance Enhancing Drugs ) right now, is cyclist Lance Armstrong’s confession to drug use. Lance Armstrong is an American cyclist who won many events such as the tour de france, the longest and most popular race in the world, several times. He is an icon for any cyclist. He has always seemed like a very nice and innocent guy and nobody thought he would do drugs. But recently he was tested positive for PED’s. He has just confessed last week to Oprah on live television that he has used PED’s most of his career.  A lot of people neglect that their is actually a large use of this in cycling. A top – notch professional cyclist can travel 20 miles per hour up a pitch of 40 degrees and can do this for at least 45 minutes without losing energy. Even though Lance is incredibly fit, later towards his career he needed that little boost to enable him to still compete, and that is what led to Lance’s drug use problem.

It makes a lot of people mad at what sports are coming too these days. Steroids are unfair and a little bit selfish too. A lot of people don’t care much if someone is doing PED’s, but it really is cheating. I feel that about one – quarter of the top athletes are doing drugs. Athletes are doing whatever they can and taking whatever they can, to make the millions they are and to stay on top of their sport.

Mia Hamm: A Legendary Soccer Player

Mia Hamm was once an amazing soccer player. She retired after playing for the Women’s United States National Soccer Team in 2004.

Mia was the youngest girl to join the women’s team at age fifteen. She had scored the most goals ever in history of men and women’s soccer with hundred fifty-eight goals. When Mia’s team had won the FIFA World Cup she again, was the youngest women to be on a team in FIFA World Cup at age nineteen. Mia was even an olympic athlete! Her team had made it to the olympic championships and came out with the gold in 1996 and 2004. Also, that wasn’t the only championships she had, in college she brought her University Of North Carolina women’s soccer team to the NCAA women’s championship four times.

Mia Hamm was a known and acknowledged player. She had billions and billions of fans. Nobody wanted her to retire, so many people loved watching her play. Now eight years later when I am loving soccer and want to be like her I am one of her fans. I love hearing and reading her inspirational quotes. One of my favorites is: “Failure happens all the time. It happens everyday in practice. What makes you better is how you react to it.”-Mia Hamm. Besides all her fans and gold medals she has won player awards. Mia was voted USA’s Soccer female athlete five years in a row. Also, MVP of the Women’s Cup in 1995.

Mia Hamm has won so many great things, and is a terrific person. If you think no big deal, well you should think again. It is so hard to become the best known soccer player ever.  Continue reading

On Wednesday January 16, 2013 in Oracle Arena history was made by 28 year old LeBron James for the Miami Heat. James became the youngest player to reach 20,000 points in a career and he also reached the 5,000 mark for assists. James is now one of 11 people with 20,000 points, 5,000 assists, and 5,000 rebounds. LeBron reached 5,000 rebounds last year. James is one of 38 players to pass 20,000 points including his teammate Ray Allen.

LeBron James was drafted in 2003 first overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers right out of high school. He went to St. Vincent St. Mary High School in Ohio. James was a great high school basketball player, and he won many awards. He was named Consensus 2003 National High School Player of the Year. He was also named parade High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the as a Junior and a Senior. LeBron James was the first 2-time winner in the 47-year history of the award. He was also named USA Today boys’ high school basketball Player of the Year junior and senior seasons. Lastly James was named Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior and senior.

This season LeBron is 5th in the ppg (points per game) averaging 26 points and 10th in assists with 6.9 per game. James’ had 20 plus points in the first 33 games of the season the second largest 20 plus points streak from the beginning of a season. LeBron James is arguably the best NBA player ever and he has not even played 10 years yet, he is only 28 years old and is getting better. Lebron James is my favorite sports player because of his determination, resilience and his skill. I believe by the end of LeBron’s career he will have broken almost all the records and will win many more championships and gold medals. I hope everyone will believe that he is as good or better than Michael Jordan. LeBron is a one of a kind player who is 6’8 and can dribble and shoot like a 6’1 point guard but, can still rebound and dunk like a 7 foot center. This is why he is the best player the NBA has and will ever have, and welcome to the 20,000 points and 5,000 assist club.

Carmelo Anthony: A Legend

I am a huge basketball fan, and as a result, I follow the National Basketball Association (NBA). On a long term basis, Lebron James is my favorite all-around player in the NBA. However, as of this year and seeing from his performances and leadership, I have taken a big liking to Carmelo Anthony, number seven on the New York Knicks. Anthony currently averages 29.3 points per game, second in the NBA, behind Kobe Bryant from the Los Angeles Lakers. Anthony averages 2.7 three-point field goals per game, eighth in NBA. I believe Anthony could and probably will lead his team to the Eastern Conference Finals and maybe even the NBA Finals. As of now, his team is ranked fifth all around in the NBA and second in the Eastern Conference.

Carmelo Anthony brings a spark to the court. He makes his teammates better and effectively creates open shots for not only them but himself too. It is so fun to watch him play because I, as a basketball player myself, can learn from his moves, such as creating my shot or exploding to the basket, and I can also learn from his mistakes (turnovers) and how to prevent them from happening to me.  Continue reading
