You Can Help Save Our Planet

“The global environment crisis is, as we say in Tennessee, real as rain,” former Vice President Al Gore said during a recent speech. Although many people agree that action needs to be taken to reduce global warming, they wonder: Can one person really make a difference?

The answer is: Yes! There are many simple things you can do to help the environment in a big way.

We all know about recycling and that it is extremely important. I cannot stress this enough because in United States, 2.5 million plastic water bottles are thrown away every hour. So the next time you reach for a plastic water bottle, think about that fact and choose a refillable glass bottle instead. The glass bottle will reduce the amount of petroleum needed to make plastic bottles, reduce the carbon dioxide emissions created during the manufacturing process, and eliminate the air pollution created while cleaning up the discarded bottles.

Using recycled paper every day also helps our environment. If you use one box of 100% post consumer recycled paper, you reduce carbon emissions by 5 pounds. And don’t forget that paper recycling also applies to other products such as facial tissues, toilet paper, and paper towels.

Using recycled paper also saves a lot of trees, which add a lot of beauty to our environment. Perhaps even more important, trees give off oxygen and purify the air we breathe by absorbing harmful chemicals and carbon dioxide. An average-sized tree produces enough oxygen in one year to keep a family of four breathing for one year, and an acre of trees removes up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide each year. So why not plant a tree in your yard or suggest that your school have a tree-planting day? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, planting trees is a must if we want to save the planet. Trees also provide food and shelter for forest animals. Even after they die, trees help our planet: They are biodegradable, recyclable, and renewable.

When we think about helping our planet, we also need to think about the food we eat. Did you know that most fruit and vegetables in our supermarkets were picked 4 to 7 days before they reached the store, and that they traveled by plane or truck an average of 1,500 miles? If you buy locally-grown food, you reduce the air pollution and carbon emissions produced during the food’s transportation. Buying from local farmers also helps make it profitable for them to farm. In this way, we can help preserve areas of land used for planting, and reduce the amount of land sold to developers who often cut down trees to build houses and roads. Buying local food is also better for our health. Once picked, food begins to lose its nutritional value, and the further it travels, the greater the nutritional loss. So stay healthy and help our environment by eating local food.

Another way you can help our planet is to take shorter showers every day. The average shower uses 2.5 gallons of water per minute. If you reduced your shower time by 4 minutes each day, you would save 3,650 gallons of water per year. Environmentalists have serious concerns about present and future water shortages on our planet. So why not shorten your shower by 4 minutes a day and use that 28 minutes a week to do something that’s more fun than taking a shower? Maybe you could talk to a friend or get going with your day faster.

It’s up to each of us to do what we can to save our planet, and as you can see, simple actions can have significant results. “Global warming, along with the cutting and burning of forests and other critical habitats, is causing the loss of living species at a level comparable to the extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. That event was believed to have been caused by a giant asteroid. This time it is not an asteroid colliding with the Earth and wreaking havoc: it is us.” (Former Vice President Al Gore) Yes, it is us, and it’s up to each of us to make changes. Let’s get started!

Should the Redskins Change their Name?

The Washington Redskins are a professional football team that was started in 1932. After over eighty years of playing in the NFL, people want to change the Redskin name because they believe it refers to Native Americans in a racist manner.

The owner of the team Dan Snyder has stated many times that he would never change the Redskin name. Some fans in The D.C. area want to keep the name because it is a major part of their past, and they identify the team by its name.

If people want the Redskins to change their name, why not other sports teams across the country? Teams like the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Blackhawks have references to Native Americans. In the article Should the Washington Redskins Change their Name, it says , It says that “ most Native Americans aren’t bothered by the word”. The Native American Community as a whole should be consulted on this matter. If the majority of the Native American community is not offended by the word, then the owners of the football teams should be able to keep their name.

The Washington Redskins football team has been around for over eighty years. They have won championships and are a big part of the city. The fans identify the team by its nickname. If the Native American community as a whole does not have a problem with the name, than the city and its fans should be able to keep the name.

Modern Advances Come With Responsibility

In today’s age, technology is a part of everything. Almost everyone is constantly checking texts or social media. New technology like 3D printers could become a normal appliance in the near future. However, some gadgets are becoming all too much. Sure, phones help keep you connected with friends and world news. But what if it starts to replace real interaction? We need to consider how our actions could affect the future of our world. I don’t want to sound corny talking about this, but change is a serious topic. If we have changed so much in the past decade, what will the near future look like? At some point, we need to start being a little more simplistic. Otherwise, there will be no escaping the constant cell phone ring or texting. We are human beings, not cyborgs. We also need to think about what powers these gadgets, and how to be more efficient.

One of the best parts of modern technology is medical advances. We are so much more advanced today than we were ten years ago. This is one of the pros to modern day living. Transportation is improving as well. More environmentally friendly vehicles are being designed. Until we improve, we need to become even MORE efficient. We are so dependent on electrical power today, it is ridiculous. Think about it like this.. what happens when the power goes out during a storm? The lights, oven, refrigerator, outlets, and other appliances cease to work. We need to become more dependent on other resources. The same goes for gasoline. We constantly pump gas into our vehicles just to make them work. Emissions are released into the air until the fuel tank is empty. Gasoline is a LIMITED resource. We can’t depend on these two resources because someday gasoline and oils supplies will be depleted. Also, we cannot solely rely on electric power to charge and work home appliances. Sure, this supply is not limited. But if it fails to work, we are lost.

We need to become more responsible and aware of our technology use. If not, it will become a factor in everything. It is hard to imagine what the future will look like, but I do know one thing. Unless we slow down on technological advances and resource use, we will have a big problem. After all, when you have pros it’s important to also take a look at the cons.

What Will Make the New COD Be The Best

As most gaming enthusiasts know, Call of Duty Ghosts will be coming out November 5, 2013 for the new generation of consoles. This will be the tenth installment of the multi-million dollar franchise and as many people agree, the series is growing stale. It seems like after Modern Warfare 2 that there seems to be a cycle players go through. The first three months every is saying the game is the best, the next three months the game gets boring, but everyone still plays it, the next three months everyone goes back to playing the game released before it saying it was much better, and then the last few months everyone gets pumped for the new COD that everyone forgets about the old COD. What COD Ghosts needs to do to keep players into it is something we’ve been asking for a long time. They need to run dedicated servers for each game mode. This reduces lag to almost nothing, which means if you don’t pull host you’ll have just as good as a connection as the person who did pull host. If Infinity Ward and Activision put as much time into this as we assume, it will revolutionize the way we play video games.

Xbox One

The Xbox One was announced on May 21, 2013. This console was made to revolutionize the way you play video games. It has an 8-core CPU, 8 gigabytes of RAM, and 500 gigabytes storage, this console is taking a leap to the future. With an entirely redesigned look for everything (Xbox, controller, and Kinect), it is going to put the PS4 in a bad position going into E3 this summer. All eyes are going to be on Microsoft’s presentation instead of Sony’s because their presentation in February was so bad that they didn’t even show the console. I think that the Xbox franchise is going to greatly expand because of how cool this console is. Although they only gave the public a tidbit of information, E3 will certainly shed some light on how amazing this console is going to be. Although pricing and the release is unknown, it is rumored to be $400 and release this holiday season.

Top Rides at Six Flags Great Adventure

When visiting New Jersey, there is one place you have to go; Six Flags Great Adventure. It is the best amusement park I have ever been to! The park is scattered with some crazy roller coasters and rides. Here is a list of my favorites. If you like roller coasters, you need to ride these before your life is complete. The lines are long but trust me, they’re worth the wait. (Note: Did not ride Bizarro due to lack of time, so it did not make the list. The youtube videos following were taken on the rides. I do not own these videos, and they WILL make you dizzy. Information credit to

4. Green Lantern

Green Lantern was one of the most unique rides I have ever gone on for one reason; you ride standing up. This unique coaster lets you “stand up to your fear”. Green Lantern features a coaster design new to Six Flags with seats that let the rider stand. Don’t worry, you are still strapped in tight. This roller coaster stands 154 feet in the air. It is one of the longest roller coasters at Great Adventure ( 2 minutes, 30 seconds), and has a top speed of 63 mph. The only factor that I didn’t like was that it gave me a headache. The tight turns made my head hit the seat a couple times.

3. Batman: The Ride

This was the first big coaster we did at Six Flags. It is a crazy, awesome ride. The seat design on this coaster lets your feet dangle while you go through several loops and corkscrews. “Batman: The Ride” stands 10.5 stories tall, and reaches a top speed of 50 mph. Although it is not a newer roller coaster (first introduced in 1993), it gives plenty of thrills. Look for the black and yellow for an adventure fit for Batman!

2. Nitro

Nitro features many twists, turns, drops, and accelerations in a mile long track. The beginning features a rise that seems to go on forever (part nerves!) with a drop on the end (215 feet) steep enough to scare the devil. This roller coaster reaches speeds as high as 80 mph. Unlike most roller coasters, the track is very long, therefore increasing the fun factor.

1. Kingda Ka

Kingda Ka is CRAZY. Standing 45 stories tall, it is the tallest roller coaster in the world. From the starting point, you get launched 45 stories and go from 0 mph to 128 mph in three seconds. This extreme launch makes Kingda Ka the fastest coaster in North America. You literally stick to your seat as you fly above the skyline into the gut- wrenching drop. It was the coolest most awesome thing I have ever done. Watch the video below to really get a sense of what it is like. You haven’t lived until you ride Kingda Ka.

WW2 effect on europe

World War II was one of the the most impactful war in history. World War II impacted Europe both during and after the war. World War II left a weakened economy in Europe. It left people suffering and families starving. And it caused significant controversy between European countries. World War II changed Europe in such a dramatic way that the continents next decade would be very controversial.

One of the most important things that World War II had an impact on was Europe’s economy. Because of money spent on weapons, soldiers, and medical equipment, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Soviet Union lost ¼ of their nations wealth. Not to mention the money spent to clean up the mess. Germany alone spent over 25 billion dollars on weapons. They spent over 25 billion on medical supplies and 50 million on vehicles. The Soviet Union easily doubled what Germany spent, making them lose lots of valuable money. France, the United Kingdom, and Italy also paid billions of dollars in World War II. The estimated total amount of money spent during World War II was $1,600,000,000,000 leaving Europe a whole lot less rich.

Another thing that WW2 had an effect on was the people of Europe. About 80 – 90 million people died in world war II. That includes civilians and soldiers. Peoples homes were destroyed. Nazi’s would kill people and then burn down their homes, making a large percentage of people in Europe homeless and weak. Farmers would no longer be able to work, because the Nazis would rip apart their land or use it for battle practice. The Nazi’s would occupy shops to store their weapons. They would close the stores, making lots of people go out of business. WW2 affected human rights of people, their living environment, and overall their general living condition.

The last major thing that WW2 affected was the relationship between countries. Europe became a very controversial continent after WW2. The alliance between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union began to deteriorate even before the war was over. Due to the rising tension in Europe and concerns over further Soviet expansion, American planners came up with a plan code-named Operation Dropshot in 1949. It considered possible nuclear war with the Soviet Union and its allies in order to counter a Soviet takeover of Western Europe, the Near East and parts of Eastern Asia that they anticipated would begin around 1957. In response, the U.S. would saturate the Soviet Union with atomic and high-explosive bombs, and then invade and occupy the country. The Soviet Union viewed these developments as “atomic blackmail. The U.S. sought to promote an economically strong and politically united Western Europe to counter the threat posed by the Soviet Union. This was a good plan but it would not be enough in the long run.

WW2 was very violent and gruesome. It changed Europe very much, but Europe is now very strong and back to normal.

Is Today’s Music Too Much?

photo credit: wikimedia commons, Nevit Dilmen

Music has evolved with history. Let’s just say that you don’t usually hear classical and disco songs much these days. But what is considered “music” today can be a little much. Remember when you could hear a person’s voice when they sang? When instruments weren’t replaced by a soundboard? Unfortunately, things are taking a turn for the worst, and quality music may soon become history.

I understand that everyone has a different taste in music. I get that. But in my opinion, you should at least be able to tell if an artist has talent. Today, anyone could sound like a pro with auto-tune and a techno beat. So many singers do just that. They record a song, and let auto-tune do the rest of the work. Come on people, it’s called singing for a reason. A singer should sing, and not let music producers sit behind their computers and crank out songs.

Luckily, there is still hope for the future in music. Believe it or not, there are some artists out there who aren’t all about the techno auto-tune. Imagine that! I like to believe that these artists are making a comeback in the music business. A few examples are “The Lumineers”, “Mumford and Sons”, “Fun.”, and several others. As far as I am concerned, my music shouldn’t sound like microphone feedback, an old computer starting up, or give me a headache. Dubstep, I’m looking at you. If this music “craze” continues, they should at least make a new music genre for auto-tune. That way, I know what music is real and what is not. Sure, I’ll admit it. I’ve listened to the techno songs. Some are catchy, but gosh I bet they killed a few brain cells.
