9 Problems that People With Curly Hair Have (And How to Solve Them)

I’ve always had curly hair, and I’ve always been jealous of people that have straight hair. They don’t know what curly-haired people go through to take care of our hair! The list below shows the top 9 problems we curly-heads go through, and how to fix them.

1: Your conditioner bottle is always 2 times less than your shampoo.

Curly hair is naturally drier than other types of hair. When you have curly hair, it tends to either frizz or become dry easily, due to the need of moisture for the curls. Whenever you take a shower, you need to condition it to make sure your hair stays moisturized. If you have curly hair, you should only shampoo once or twice a week, since shampoo generally can add oils or frizz to your hair. For conditioners, I recommend TRESemme. My curls always look healthy when I use that conditioner, because of the high levels of keratin in the conditioner. Keratin is a protein that your hair needs to grow.

2: Taking two hours to straighten it.

If you have curly hair, everyone always asks you to straighten it, because you’d look like a different person, right? Well yeah, but do you really want to wake up at 5 in the morning to straighten your hair? Didn’t think so. An option is to straighten your hair the night before, and then straighten it again in the morning. When picking a straightener, try looking for one that has a built-in comb teeth or steam functions that can tame the curls. Always spray your hair with a heat-protectant before putting any kind of heat on it. The heat-protectant will help keep your hair from being heat damaged.

3: Frizz.

People always ask you to leave your hair down, but you know best that its going to look like a lion’s mane at the end of the day. To tame frizz, try rinsing your hair with cold water after you condition it in the shower. This takes out any excess shampoo, tames the frizz, and gives the hair a shiny look. Also look for shampoos that say “for dry or damaged hair” instead of “frizz controlling”.

4: Hair ties snapping regularly.

Since your hair has A LOT of volume, plus the added frizz, hair ties can easily stretch out and break. Always carry a minimum of two on you. Personally, I like to buy Goody hair ties. Goody hair ties are very durable, and can last up to 1 week if you use them right. They reduce snags and breakage of the hair.

5: Your hair taking all day to dry, and never being able to blow dry it.

Blow-drying will just make your hair frizz, and you know how much we curly haired people hate frizz. Never use a brush, you will destroy your hair. “ Bristles fray the hair, disturb curl formation, and create a cloud of frizz,” says Lorraine Massey of Devachan Salon for Allure Magazine. Instead, use wide-toothed combs, but only when your hair is wet. What I do to dry my hair is put it in a topknot, or a high bun, after I take  a shower and take it out when I go to bed. This helps your hair dry naturally, and makes it even curlier!

6: Tangles.

Your hair is always getting caught on things like back of chairs right? This is because of the tangles in our hair. When one of them snags on an object, and you feel a sharp tug on the back of your head, you can thank the tangles. To prevent tangles, try looking for a detangler. I recommend Herbal Essences. Their detangler have built in conditioner and keratin in them, so they give your hair the repair it needs.

7: Having minimum hairstyle options.

Since your hair is so big, sometimes leaving it down isn’t the best idea. It’ll frizz, and you’ll look like a lion. The most common (and easy) hairstyles are bun, ponytail, and braid, because you can sort-of tame your hair. A half-up/half-down ponytail is also common. If you want, you can try other variations of these hairstyles to mix things up sometimes such as the French braid, braided bun, and or side-ponytail.

8: Having to do a full on FBI-scale inspection on hairstylists before you get your haircut.

You do not want to end up with a triangle shaped haircut. Also make sure to only get either a trim or 1-2 inches off depending on how short your hair is. You do not want to end up with an accidental afro (hello my third-grade haircut all over again!) Curly hair is harder to cut, and hair schools don’t teach how to cut it either. “You can’t cut curly hair accurately,” Jonathon Torch, founder of Curly Hair Solutions says. “Learning to break the rules and to cut hair unevenly is foreign to hairdressers. You have to change your whole thought process.” When you go to a hair salon, either ask for someone that cuts curly hair only, or someone that has curly hair themselves.

9: Spending A LOT of money on hair-care products.

How you take care of your hair makes or breaks you. You don’t want to look like you were just caught in a thunderstorm in July. But if you buy wisely, your hair can look both happy and healthy. Buy a good conditioner and defrizzer.

Love it or hate it, we curly-heads are lucky to be born with our beautiful hair. So embrace it, and make sure to treat it right!

Sally Hansen: Stick On Nails Review

Sally Hansen’s products are known to be one of the top selling beauty lines. Their products range from nail polishes to skin & body products. I recently received the Sally Hansen stick on nails, the Tye-Dye For, as a present from a close friend. The “stick on nails” aren’t stickers at all. It is real nail polish without the drying time!

I really liked this product because it is very dummy proof to apply and there is no drying time. The package included a nail file, a stick to push back your cuticles and the stick on nails. Putting the nails on were extremely similar to putting on fake nails. You find the nail sticker  that fits closest to your nail size, peel off the back and apply it to your nail. You then take the nail file and file the ends of your nail and you’re finished!

A negative about the product is that it doesn’t stay on for very long, approximately 10 days  and chips easily. Other than that I really liked the product. It removes easily with nail polish and fits all nail shapes and sizes. I have also received numerous amounts of compliments on my nails while wearing them. You would never be able to tell that they are stickers, they look so real and definitely look salon quality. There are 40 stick on nail patterns and designs available on the Sally Hansen website and can be found in the beauty section of local drugstores. I recommend you buy them!  Continue reading

Bangs are the new style for 2013!

Something new to try for the new year are bangs! It’s a new year, so why not change your image a little? It’s good to change things up every once in awhile. Bangs are becoming in style once again! Even celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepson, Michelle Obama, Kim Kardashian and more have bangs!

Bangs are such a simple hairstyle, yet can dress up any outfit or occasion. They’re easy to style and deal with, but can be a hassle to keep up with if you have a busy schedule.

Some things you should consider before getting bangs is that bangs take awhile to grow out, so be sure you want to get them before cutting of your hair. They need to be trimmed every two weeks, so be ready to make time for that. As well as what style of bangs you want to get.

There are many different styles of bangs such as Blunt bangs, Side Swept bangs, Parted bangs, choppy bangs, asymmetrical bangs, and disconnected bangs. Depending on your face shape you may want to try a certain style of bangs that will frame your face best. If you have an oval faced shape, you’re able to pull off all the styles (lucky)! If you have a round face try going for a feathered style of bangs! They will softly drape over the forehead and make your cheekbones pop. If you have a long face consider blunt bangs, as they will make your face look more oval. If you have a square face consider side-swept bangs, as they will soften the edges of the face.

The secret to having celebrity bangs is in the products and the way the bangs are blow dried. Some stylists recommend you blow dry your bangs while their damp and others say to blow dry them while their sopping wet, but it will vary depending upon the thickness, texture and type of bangs.

Gel manicure vs. Regular polish manicure

There are many pros and cons when choosing to get a gel manicure or a regular polish  manicure. Gel nails last longer, great for traveling, and dry instantly.  With regular nail polish it comes off quicker and does not ruin your nails, a regular nail manicure tends to be less expensive. However a gel manicure seems to be much easier to maintain than a regular polish manicure. You have to balance out the pros and cons when choosing what type of manicure to get.

First of all gel manicures last much longer than regular polish. The gel nails can last up to two to three weeks without chipping. This is great if you are going on vacation, because you won’t have to worry about your nails chipping or getting smudged. Also if you travel a lot, have your hands in water or work  all the time you may not have  much time to get your nails done once a week. So gels would be great for you. Although regular nail polish is great, it doesn’t last long and chips very quickly. Therefore a gel manicure would be better than a regular manicure.

When getting a gel manicure it can take up to 30-45. However you don’t have to wait for them to dry, and they last for two to three weeks. If you get gel nails done the color sets while its under a UV light, so once your manicure is over your nails are dry, and they won’t smudge if you touch them. This is great because you don’t have to take the extra 10 or 15 minutes to wait for them to dry. This is great because often times people end up smudging their nails getting money from their purse or while digging in their purse for their keys. For this reason gel manicures are faster and easier.

Since gel nails can be bad for your nails you should give your nails a break from them every once in awhile. That’s why it is very recommended to go back to your nail salon to get the gel nails removed. Overall I think  getting gel nails is a better choice even though they can damage your nails if you peel them off.

Is tanning really worth it?

I think that tanning booths should at least be illegal to use under the age of 18. I think they should be illegal under this age because when you are under 18 you are most likely to make decisions you will regret. Hopefully, by time you are 18 you care more about your body than you were when you were 15. Another reason why you should be 18 years old would be so you cannot be forced into a tanning booth through pressure from friends or family.

Being at such a young age people probably won’t listen to you if you don’t want to go in the booth.
Recently in the news a New Jersey mother was arrested for putting her 5 year-old daughter into the tanning booth. The laws in New Jersey do not allow any child under the age of 14 in a tanning booth. Children older than 14 are allowed to use the booth as long as a parent says that it is alright. Patricia Krentcil declines that her daughter had been in the tanning booth, but she is on bail following her arrest of second degree endangerment charge. She is most likely guilty of putting her daughter in the tanning booth; Patricias’ skin looks almost like leather. She said that she has been tanning her whole life whether it was going to the beach, tanning booths, and so forth.

I believe that tanning booths should probably be completely illegal because they are extremely dangerous for your health. If you use the tanning booth your chance of melanoma increases by 75% by the age of 35. Another scary fact of tanning is that it may very well become an addiction as the UV radiation have a drug like effect on your body. I’m not sure if many people are really trying to make tanning booths illegal but they are making an effort to cut down the amount of uses. Starting this July, you’re going to have to pay a 10% tax every time you go into the booth. It’s up to you whether you risk your chances of cancer in order to be tan, but I strongly discourage the use of the booth. Unless you do want your skin to turn into leather, I would suggest using tanning lotions such as Jergens Healthy Glow to provide a much safer tan.

Cat Eye To Smokey Eye

Black eyeliner has been a main staple of make-up for many years.  From the iconic Kardashian smokey eye, to Lauren Conrad’s everyday cat wing, black pencil eyeliner has proven to enhance the natural color of your eye, adding an extra pop to your everyday look.  In this blog post, I will help you decide which eyeliner is best for you, comparing different brands and drug store versus professional liners.

ImageDrug store brands are a great alternative to the professional and sometimes expensive eyeliners.  For the most part, they serve the same purpose and are a lot less expensive than say your liners from MAC or Sephora.  The only thing is that the pigment and quality of the ingredients in the eyeliners are lower than the professional brands.  I’ve done tests and comparisons of some revlon and covergirl pencil liners compared to MAC and Urban Decay’s liners to see which is better.  The results were just as I thought they would be.  The drug store brands were less pigmented and a little opaque when they were applied to the skin; whereas the Urban Decay liner was very dark and stayed on when I did the water test.  Drug store liners are very easy to get too.  Going to any local drug store like CVS or Walgreens can get you what you need.  You can also get it at Target or a supermarket in the beauty section of the store.  Drug store brands are a lot cheaper and easier to get and you are paying the right price for what you get.  If you are on a budget and saving up money they are the products out there.

Image
Professional grade eyeliners are great for parties, a dinner night out, or to a regular day at school or work.  When people hear the word professional they think of very expensive things, or stuffthat is not available to the public.  This is false.  Getting professional qualitymake-up is very easy.  You can get it at Sephora or a beauty supply store like Ulta or Sally’s.  Some of the best brands and shades are Urban Decay’s 24/7 glide on pencils in the shade perversion or zero.  They are both solid, very pigmented, jet black pencil liners.  They are applied very easily too, gliding on the skin, creating a smooth line.   Another good eyeliner is MAC’s smolder eye pencil.  It isn’t as pigmented as the Urban Decay liner, but it is a great product.  I personally prefer Urban Decay’s liner for everyday use because it stays on throughout the whole day without smudging or running.  MAC’s liner would be better use for parties or dinners.

I hope this entry has helped you decide which eyeliner is best for you! There aren’t really any bad liners it just depends on what you are looking for, whether you want it to be waterproof, pigmented, or smudge proof.  There are endless possibilities.
