So, it’s summer. You’re sitting on the couch, bored, watching some reality TV and eating some junk food for the fifth day in a row, wondering what to do. All you know is you want three things; a nice tan, a good exercise, and to be on the water. Well, I have the answer for you! Try out crew.
Crew is a very up and coming sport in the United States, and with good reason. It will get you in great shape, fast, and is fun. Through crew it is easy to make friends with other teammates and have fun the whole time. Most kids don’t know much about crew, and I didn’t either until I tried it, but it is so interesting once you figure out how everything works. Basically it is a race, in a boat, trying to get to the finish line first, but it is actually so much more. You sit in the boat, facing the opposite way that the boat is moving. There are many different kinds of crew, there is sculling, eight seat, four seat, and two seat. The way that you move your oar is very specific so that your boat will move rhythmically. A coxswain sits in the stern and directs the rowers and turns the boat as needed. When the coxswain yells out “seat 4 ready to row!” that’s when you know it’s your turn to row. You scrunch your body forward as far as you can, and when the coxswain yells row, you pull back with all your strength and you push the boat forward with that movement. Sounds confusing, I know, but when you get out on the water and do it, it is surprisingly relaxing.
It takes some motivation to actually sign up to try it, but once you do, you won’t regret it. You have the sun beating down on your back, with the occasional splash of water from an oar slapping the water, while getting a great exercise. What more can you ask for?
