Once he was about 25 he entered the Austrian military Felix spent most of his practicing parachute jumping, including training to land on small targets. He continued to do this for years and years, until he became very experienced.

His first base jumps he says were very scary. He said there was no one really to help him out. He says it always scares his family whenever he tells them he is doing another jump. He continued to do more and more jumps, and wanted to start experimenting with it. He decided to embark on the scariest jump of his life. Baumgartner’s most recent project was Red Bull Stratos. This mission took many years of planning.  The purpose of the Red Bull Stratus mission is to transcend human limits. The Red Bull Stratos team brings together the world’s leading minds in aerospace medicine, engineering, pressure suit development, capsule creation and balloon fabrication.

Supported by a team of experts, partnered with Red Bull energy drinks, Felix Baumgartner ascended to 128,100 feet in a stratospheric balloon and made a free fall jump rushing toward earth at supersonic speeds before parachuting into a desert of New Mexico. He set the world record for skydiving at 39 kilometers, reaching an estimated speed of 1357.64 km/h, and became the first person to break the sound barrier without vehicular power on his descent. In total, the jump lasted approximately eight minutes and eight seconds. His successful feat on Oct. 14, 2012 holds the potential to provide valuable medical and scientific research data for future pioneers. Felix Baumgartner will never be forgotten, as he showed us that “ The only limit is the one you set for yourself “

  1. I saw this live – it was insane! It was pretty cool, but I will admit that I really didn’t think it was possible when I first starting watching. Not anything I will do anytime soon – that’s for sure! Did you know that part of his spacesuit was made here in Worcester?
