Whats with all the buzz about kickstarter?

You probably heard something about kickstarter this year maybe from a friend or a website, and you’re wondering what all the buzz about it is, right? Well you came to the right place, so gather around the campfire and let me tell you about one of the coolest things to hit the web this year.

Kickstarter has been around for a number of years, but it has only truly kicked off this year, “no pun intended”. The whole philosophy around kickstarter is to allow people to pitch their ideas to you, that they can’t fund by conventional means, publishers and companies.  You and many others will have the opportunity to  help crowdfund an innovative new concept.

This could lead to many awesome things like the Ouya, a brand new video game console or the Pebble E-Paper. You can watch the highest funded thing on kickstarter raising over ten million dollars! It’s inspiring to see such amazing technology, games, and ideas emerging from a website.

One thing to keep in mind is that the money you invest is not a donation. There are usually many tiers of rewards earned when you financially support an idea.  The most basic reward usually giving you the full product and   the highest one having you fly out to meet the team developing the product in question. Reward potential  doesn’t mean kickstarter is perfect, as their can be scams on kickstarter. Make sure you research the product you’re backing and always have the mindset that the project you backed might never see the light of the day. Even if you don’t plan on ever backing anything on kickstarter, just stop by one day and take a look. You may find what you like.
