A Short History of American Football

Since the Superbowl is coming up, I felt that is was appropriate to write about football.

Even though football is the most played sport in America, many people do not even know the history behind it.

American football was invented around the mid 1800s when a man named Walter Camp started changing the rules of rugby. Amongst these new rules were adding downs and adding a line of scrimmage.

Football was first played sometimes with a lemon for a ball and with very crude padding and helmets. The first official game in the U.S. was in 1869 between Rutgers College and College of New Jersey. The Rutgers won 6 to 4.

That was a very short history behind the most loved sport in America, now here are some random fun facts football.

  • Jim Marshal once picked up a fumble and scored for the opposing team.
  • Randy Moss owns a smoothie franchise.
  • Trent Green was on Wheel of Fortune.
  • It takes 3000 cows to provide enough leather for the NFL in one year.
  • About 14,500 tons of potato chips are consumed on super bowl saturday.
  • The Colorado Rockies drafted Michael Vick even though he had not played baseball since 8th grade.
  • There is no footage of super bowl 1.
  • The NFL is the richest sports league.

So the next time you sit down on your couch with some beer and a bag of potato chips, I hope you will remember some of the history of our beloved game.
