Out of the 772 different characters J.K. Rowling has created in the last decade for the story of Harry Potter, each of them complete with their own back story, three of them stand out as my favorites.

Number three: Dobby the House Elf
If I were to have a list of my top three favorite creatures from Harry Potter, Dobby the house elf would be number one, but since this is a top three character list he comes in as number three. We are first introduced to Dobby in the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when he arrives at Privet Drive to warn Harry not to come back to Hogwarts that school year. He appears various times throughout the series, making cameo appearances in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh books. He saves various lives and becomes a very important character, until his very disappointing and untimely death. While protecting Harry at Malfoy Manor in book seven, he is murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange, and dies peacefully on the beaches of Shell Cottage. Dobby tends to be the comic relief in the toughest of times, and overall is a great character.
Number two: Hermione Granger
Hermione may be the nerdy sidekick of Harry Potter, but she is actually one of the most well developed and important characters throughout the series. In books one through four, Hermione presents herself as a know-it-all, paranoid young witch, but in book five she becomes a rebellious and brave young woman. In books six and seven she is extremely useful to the trio (brain wise) and continues to grow into a courageous friend, girlfriend, and 8 years later, a mother. Hermione’s wits, brains, and simplicity are the main reasons she is my second favorite character.
Number one: Severus Snape AKA The Half-Blood Prince
When I think of Severus Snape, the first thing that comes to my mind is when he said to Hermione Granger in book three: “Tell me, are you incapable of restraining yourself, or do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all?” The second thing that comes to my mind is bravery. Snape, in my opinion, was the most brave, heroic, and intriguing character throughout the series. In books one through six and most of seven, I despised Snape. He was cruel, unfair, and seemed to be on Voldemort’s side. My opinion completely changed when Harry looked at Snape’s memories in the pensieve (the chapter The Prince’s Tale in book seven). Since this is the most important secret of the series, I won’t give anything away. If I explained the secret in detail, you would understand why I like the character Snape so much, but I think you get the gist: bravery is why Snape is my favorite character.

Harry Potter is one of the most recognized book and film series from 1997 to 2011. In 1997, Joanne Kathleen Rowling (pronounced Roe – ling) was traveling back to London from Manchester on a train when the idea of the world’s most recognized children’s book series was born. Jo spent months in “The Elephant House” a popular Café in Edinburgh writing the story of Harry Potter on napkins. Not only was a story created in that café, but Jo created a cast of over 100 characters (each with very detailed back stories), a brand new sport, a whole magical universe, and one of the most amazing friendships ever created in literature. The story was split into seven books, each darker than the previous one.
